EMAIL ABOUT THIS PAINTING

FRAMED AND READY TO HANG. THE PAINTING WILL BE PROFESSIONALLY PACKED, SHIPPED & INSURED VIA FEDEX.

"Scotch Bonnet and Laughing Gulls" was created to complete the signed and numbered limited edition print set entitled "The Shell Collection" which will be released late November 2014. This is the original alkyd painting- not a reproduction or print.

Shell collecting is a hobby the artist picked up later in life after befriending conchologist and author S. S Peter DancePeter Dance, who offers:

"The world of shells has been my world for sixty years or more. In that time I have seen many paintings of shells, in all media, including some that have moved me by the accuracy of their portrayal, others simply by their quiet beauty. Robert Dance's portraits of shells on the seashore display both these qualities in abundance and I look upon them with admiration - and envy. The muses, already so generous to Robert, have even given him my surname!".

*S. Peter Dance is one of the world's leading shell experts and is a well-known natural history author. Now a full-time writer and consultant, he spent sixteen years working at museums, nine of them at the Natural History Museum in London. He is the recent recipient of the SHNH Founders' Medal, an author or coathor of seventeen books, including Compendium of Shells (with R. Tucker Abbott), The Encyclopedia of Shells, The Shell Collector's Guide, Shell Collecting: an Illustrated History, Rare Shells, Classic Natural History Prints: Shells, and Country Life's The Art of Natural History.

Artist's Description: "I have always marveled that seagulls can fly in storms at sea. They seem to have exquisite control no matter what nature can throw their way. My admiration of birds is endless, and I have studied them all my life to the point that I can draw and paint them in almost any position. Here you have a creature that flies.... but never seems to crash.

This is an Acrylic painting. My total output of Acrylic paintings is probably less than four, and the ones that I have done were painted in a technique similar to egg tempera."

Artist's Description: "This painting of working lobsterboats depicts the coastline of Great Wass Island off of Jonesport, Maine. To get to Great Wass you have to first pass through Beals Island, Maine where the most beautiful Maine lobsterboats have been built for years. Great Wass has the classic rocky shoreline that has attracted visitors and residents who love the great outdoors and refreshing climate of Maine. Here you can buy freshly caught lobster down on the dock when these boats come in from their daily catch. Try it.... you'll like it!"
