An Artist and a Shell Expert, Both Named Dance,
Meet on an Island Named Sanibel - Art Ensues!
Most octogenarians walking the beaches are a decade or two into retirement. Artist Robert B. Dance still works every day. And if you spot him wandering the shore with a shell or two, he not only collects seashells but now uses them as subject matter in his artwork. Four of them have been selected for inclusion in his new print edition “The Shell Collection”. Shell collecting is a hobby the artist picked up later in life after befriending one of the world’s leading shell experts, author S. Peter Dance, who offers:
"The world of shells has been my world for sixty years or more. In that time I have seen many paintings of shells, in all media, including some that have moved me by the accuracy oftheir portrayal, others simply by their quiet beauty. Robert Dance's portraits of shells on the seashore display both these qualities in abundance and I look upon them with admiration - and envy. The muses, already so generous to Robert, have even given him my surname!"

The seashells featured in "The Shell Collection" are: the Scotch Bonnet, Pink-Mouthed Murex, Queen Conch and Knobbed Whelk. These giclee reproductions of the original shell paintings are archival, museum quality prints rendered with vibrant color fidelity and an astonishing clarity of detail.

Robert B. Dance is known as one of America's premier nautical artists and a master of technique. He has won the David Thimgan Award in The Mystic Maritime Gallery International Exhibition- the hallmark exhibition of marine art in the United States including two Awards of Excellence. S. Peter Dance is well known, on both sides of the Atlantic, for his writings and his talks about shells. His seminal Shell collecting, an illustrated history, was published in 1966, after almost a decade curating the shells stored in London’s famous Natural History Museum. Many years and a dozen or more shell books later, he met Robert on that shell collectors’ paradise, Sanibel Island, Florida. |
